Why are you standing like that?

Because my hands are clammy.

Why are your hands clammy?

My hands get clammy when I have to hold hands.

You’re not holding anyone’s hand.

But I’m about to.

I guess we do hold hands a lot at bible camp. And I’m not sure how sanitary that actually is.

I’m going to do it.

Do what?

Hold your hands.

Because I have something to tell you.

Why do you have to hold my hands to tell me? And why do you have to hold them when yours are clammy?

I’m doing it now.

Are we going to pray? Ew, your hands really are clammy. That’s weird.

I know. They’ve just always done that. Ever since my fourth grade teacher made me hold her hand in a circle.

This is weird Afa.

Blake. I like you.

Yeah I like you too.

No. Like, I like you.

Ok. I like you too.

I’m going to kiss you now.

Wh —

Sorry. Was that okay? I’ll let go of your hands now.

Wasn’t expecting that. I usually just get burritos from you.

Well that was an extension of a burrito.

I’m not sure what to say.

You don’t have to say anything. It’s just that bible camp is ending soon and you’ll be going back to Venice Beach and I’ve been giving you my burritos all summer and I want you to be my girlfriend.

I mean I could be your girlfriend, but probably only for a week. How am I going to be your girlfriend from far away?

We could write letters to each other?

We could. But don’t you want to kiss your girlfriend?

Yes. But maybe I could kiss you next year at bible camp.

What if we want to kiss other people?

I won’t. Do you?

I don’t know. I haven’t thought about it. And how could you know? Don’t you just want to kiss people when you want to kiss them? Like we can’t know the future.

I guess.

It’ll be okay Afa. It’s just how life is.

What’s going on?

I kissed Blake.

You did what!?

It was stupid.

When did this happen?

After lunch.

Why did you kiss her?

Because I like her and I wanted her to be my girlfriend.

You asked her to be your girlfriend?

Not really. I suggested it as an option.

What did she say?

She said we can’t know the future and we live far away from each other.

I wish I had a donut and a root beer.

You’re not allowed to eat those because of your diabetes.

Doesn’t mean I don’t want to.

I’ll go get you some pears and yogurt.

It’s not the same.

But it’s something.

I feel really sad Emily.

I know.

I really wanted it.

Why don’t we not get anything and just sit awhile?

Yeah. Let’s sit.
